A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
